After starring in countless direct-to-video movies, the time has come for Nicolas Cage to get back in big-budget productions again. He is all set to star as Count Dracula in Universal’s upcoming project, Renfield. He will share the screen with Nicolas Hoult and Awkwafina. The former will portray the infamous asylum inmate, R.M. Renfield. The titular character is known for devouring living creatures in the hope of consuming their life force. He is obsessed with tasting blood to achieve immortality.
The Lego Batman Movie and The Tomorrow War fame, Chris McKay, will helm the forthcoming Universal production. In August this year, the studio announced Hoult to lead the project. However, things have spiced up after the inclusion of Nicolas Cage in this damn thing.
Cage’s acting career derailed after starring in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011). We don’t have to notify how bad this movie was. Both critics and fans butchered it for good. The film’s horrible reception made it hard for the actor to star in prominent studios’ productions. Additionally, his gambling habits, lavish lifestyle, uncontrollable expenditure on useless things, unpaid taxes, and many more problems ruined his image in Hollywood.
There was a time when Cage was one of the highest-paid Hollywood celebrities. In 2007, the star brought in more than $40 million in his bank account. But after 2010, everything went haywire for him. This entire havoc forced him to star in several brainless and horrendous low-budget projects. It was the only way for him to settle his gigantic tax issues.
However, Cage’s recent out-of-the-box role selections and explosive performances have aided him to gain back the trust of the audience. Color Out of Space, Prisoners of the Ghostland, and Willy’s Wonderland displayed his distinctive gonzo persona. On the other hand, Pig brought out the actor’s best performance in a long, long time.
It seems like Cage is looking to reincarnate himself in the Hollywood industry these days. And he may succeed in his quest considering some of his recent outstanding performances.
Every cinephile is familiar with Cage’s unpredictability and dedication towards his characters. We know that he is not afraid to cross any limit present in front of him. That’s exactly what his fans want to see.
Now, Universal Pictures has signed Nicolas Cage to don Dracula’s cape for Renfield. He will portray Bram Stoker’s iconic character alongside the talented Nicolas Hoult. It seems like we have to gear up for a Nicolas vs Nicolas showdown after all. The director, Chris McKay, is also serving as one of the movie’s producers with Robert Kirkman, Bryan Furst, Sean Furst, and David Alpert. Only time will tell us how Dracula helps Cage to get back into the Hollywood mainstream again.
