Shōgun is being touted as the new Game of Thrones in terms of grandeur and is being called the best series of this decade. It has successfully mimicked the success of the HBO masterpiece, but now it might repeat the same mistake committed by Game of Thrones.
Success was evident from the very first scene of Game of Thrones, and Shōgun had that same captivating essence. However, one major flaw marred Game of Thrones: the makers stretched the show too much, leading to widespread complaints from fans.
A few months ago, it was clear that the Shōgun creators were determined not to make a second season.
“We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place,” said Justin Marks, one of the creators.
The creators reinforced this stance, saying, “Oh, that’s just our bodies talking. Like, do you want to have another kid right now? (Laughs.) You know, we also made this show so long ago, because of the long tail of postproduction on it. It’s not like a normal TV series, where if we were in a situation like this promoting it, we wouldn’t just be in the writers room already, we’d be on set shooting season two by now.”
But then, some sort of voodoo or magic happened, and they made a complete 180°. Now, it is confirmed that there will be two more seasons of Shōgun, which will definitely kill the essence of the show.
Firstly, the original book is done. It was used in the first season, and the makers will have to invest in original screenplays. We all know how bad GOT became when the books were done and Martin had to write in real-time for the show. It was a disaster.
Shōgun now has all the possibilities to follow the same footsteps. It may or may not have the best writing for the future seasons, but this will definitely affect the series. And having a fate like Game of Thrones isn’t something you can ignore. Teddy says it right, “Which would be worse – to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?”
