Sohum Shah’s ‘Crazxy’ landed in cinemas towards the end of February and despite coming fresh off the success of ‘Tumbbad’s re-release, this film by Shah did not get the kind of reception he would have expected in theatres.
‘Crazxy’ is already streaming on rent on Prime Video and will be available rent free for subscribers from this Friday, 25th April, 2025. And this where it might get interesting for this one-character, car-bound narrative film, with Sohum Shah as the only on-screen actor, supported by voice performances from Tinnu Anand, Nimisha Sajayan and Shilpa Shukla.
In theatres ‘Crazxy’ wasn’t a blockbuster but had a respectful run considering the low-budget, niche thriller film it is. It was a great watch for cinephiles and thriller enthusiasts who loved it for Shah’s stellar performance, tense atmosphere, bold, experimental approach and technical finesse. Fans also appreciated the film’s gripping screenplay, amazing cinematography by Sunil Borkar and Kuldeep Mamania and a solid soundtrack.
The one flaw that was most cited was ‘Crazxy’s climax which was felt to be weak, underwhelming and overly melodramatic. But the makers were quick to heed and soon dropped a revised climax version of the film in theatres.
‘Crazxy’ did not have a mass appeal factor but still managed to emerge as a financial success for its scale. On OTT, it might get a second life just like ‘Tumbbad’ got cult status post-theatrical release. The way the film explores themes like guilt, redemption and moral dilemmas, revolving around a surgeon racing to save his kidnapped daughter might be received well by viewers who appreciate emotionally layered thrillers.
It can be easily said that there is a cautiously optimistic expectation for Sohum Shah’s ‘Crazxy’ on OTT and it could very well become a sleeper hit on Prime Video. Though it will definitely be facing some competition from another very pleasant festival favourite film ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ by Reema Kagti which is also premiering on Prime Video this April 25th, 2025. Hopefully both the films will get their rightfully deserved outcomes on their digital debut.
