Creator and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has addressed whether Netflix’s Squid Game Season 3 will have a happy and satisfying ending. The last two seasons offered plenty of shocking and emotional moments. However, according to many fans, the second season failed to reach the same level of originality, innovation, and excitement as the debut chapter.
In a recent interview with The Playlist, Hwang was asked if Squid Game Season 3 will conclude on a happy note. Season 1 had a mixed ending, and according to Hwang, the upcoming season will receive a similar treatment. Here’s what he said:
“It is half. Half sad, half happy ending. It is right in half. So in the middle. You see what I mean? When you watch the final episode.”
In Season 1, Gi-hun emerges as the sole survivor of the deadly Squid Game, winning the massive prize money. He later discovers that Oh Il-nam, the elderly “Player 001” he befriended, was the true mastermind behind the games, having created them for the amusement of the ultra-rich. After Il-nam’s death, Gi-hun, deeply traumatised by his experience and the human cost, decides to expose and stop the games, turning away from a flight to see his daughter, with a determined look on his face.
Season 2, on the other hand, ended on a more controversial and devastating cliffhanger. It concluded with Gi-hun’s desperate attempt to expose and dismantle the games, which tragically failed. His planned rebellion among the players to reach the control room is thwarted by the Front Man, who brutally executes Gi-hun’s ally, Jung-bae, right in front of him.
Both seasons showed Gi-hun achieving moments of triumph, but all of his victories came at a terrible cost. Season 3 is expected to follow a similar pattern. Hwang’s comments suggest that the upcoming season will maintain the series’ signature bittersweet tone. While the deadly games might finally end, casualties are still likely, and the societal issues that force people into such desperation won’t be fully resolved, leaving survivors to face new challenges.
One thing is certain: Squid Game Season 3 is set to be an emotional rollercoaster. Gi-hun may finally take down the games for good, but he could pay a heavy price for it. Another fan theory even suggests that Gi-hun might become the Front Man himself to protect future contestants. Let’s see what happens.
Squid Game Season 3 premieres on June 27 on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
