Capitalizing on the popularity of a show is undoubtedly a smart business move. However, from the fans’ perspective, it can either provide an unforgettable experience or turn into a haunting disappointment.
Are all sequels bad? Definitely not.
Spin-offs? When executed well, they can be just as good as the original—if not better.
Take Better Call Saul, for instance. A significant portion of fans argue that it surpasses Breaking Bad. Narcos: Mexico follows a similar trajectory. Even within The Boys universe, Gen V is proving to be a strong contender. The industry is filled with similar success stories.
This raises a key question: what determines whether a spin-off or sequel succeeds or fails?
The answer is simple—storytelling.
If audiences feel that a franchise is being milked dry, they may react emotionally, which often leads to failure. Consider FRIENDS, one of the most iconic shows in television history. When a spin-off centered on Joey was released, it seemed promising on paper but quickly became a prime example of mere capitalization, leaving fans disappointed.
A similar trend emerged with The Walking Dead: World Beyond. While the original series captivated viewers, the spin-off lacked a compelling story to tell.
This brings us to The Office: Australia, which serves as a cautionary tale. The Office has had several adaptations, including an Indian version, but none faced as much backlash as the Australian counterpart. With so many spin-offs, the franchise began to lose its originality, and the global audience struggled to connect with the Australian humor.
Now, the question arises: will Suits LA face the same fate? It’s hard to predict.
Even Suits had a spin-off, Pearson, which was largely forgotten and ended after just one season. Although Jessica Pearson was a beloved character, fans weren’t particularly interested in her standalone narrative.
But Suits LA has the potential to break the mold. A new setting, fresh characters, and unique challenges could set it apart. The key lies in avoiding the trap of rehashing old ideas in a new package. If the creators can deliver originality, Suits LA could be a refreshing addition to the franchise.
