Another Korean drama is set to hit Netflix soon. The Good Detective is set to be streaming on Netflix, starting next Sunday. No, this isn’t what most people think of Korean dramas to be. This show was already released in South Korea in the month of July on the cable network channel JTBC. The show falls under the genre of drama, crime and thriller, something which people don’t expect from Korean dramas.
The show is based on two detectives and a five year old crime that resurfaces again only to turn everyone’s life involved in it upside down. The story follows the journey of two police detectives Kang Do-chang and Oh Ji-hyuk. Do-chang, a detective with an experience of 18 years with an impeccable expertise in both forensics and crime solving, while the latter Ji-hyuk is a young detective that has joined the department after a gap of a year, his keen insight and attention to the details makes him man for the job. These both men are partnered to open up a case that wrongfully indicted a man for murder.
Things go haywire when Kang Do-chan realises he was part of the team that put the man behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. Also, a major realisation dawns on him if he opens up the case, he and his fellow members can get into trouble for the error.
Stuck between the utter dilemma of doing the right thing of bringing justice and saving him and his team mates from punishment, Do-chan fights and along with him Ji-hyuk. A show that focuses on the ill power management and dominating the lower subordinates along with staying righteous and following the order and bringing justice, this show is powerful and impactful in all true sense.
The literal translation of the Korean name for the show in English is “A Model Detective” and truly shows how one senior and an experienced detective can become a role model. Starring Son Hyun-joo, Jang Seung-jo and Lee Elijah in lead roles, the series has been written by Choi Jin-won and directed by Jo Nam-gook. The show is in talks for a second season as the ratings of the show doubled and led the Korean TV charts by its end.
A show about righteousness and duty, one shall see if the series shows the true meaning of selfishness and selflessness.
