2020 may have been a curse for many but proved to be a blessing in disguise for OTT platforms as there was a surge in the number of viewers who migrated to these platforms to quench their thirst for daily entertainment and content.
The OTT platforms have created a unique space and we have seen a lot of experimental content being appreciated by audiences far and wide while also giving some of the low-budget movies a fair chance and a larger audience. The sudden rise in the number of subscribers on the OTT platforms was helped by the fact that theatres and other places were shut off due to the pandemic.
As we end this year and while the virus remains in our midst life is slowly getting back to normal as malls and cinema halls have started to open up once again. This begs us to wonder whether OTT platforms will enjoy the kind of success that they did in 2020 where most of the OTT players used to put out content regularly to keep the audience hooked.
We also got many local OTT platforms that established their mark and seem destined for a great future. While OTT platforms give us the advantage of witnessing some of the greatest films and series from the comforts of our homes, one cannot deny that very few things can be compared to the grand experience that the audience gets to witness in theatres. With a few big titles holding out for a theatrical release what is left to see is whether OTT platforms will still be able to enjoy the same kind of growth and traction that they got in this year.
