One of the best Hollywood actors of our generation, Christian Bale has already had two big releases this year. After having two disappointing turns in Thor: Love and Thunder and Amsterdam, he is readying himself up for a third release ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ this year. The film will play in selected theatres in the month of December and land on Netflix on January 6th, 2023.
He debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gorr and received praise for his performance in Thor : Love and Thunder. However, this Phase Four MCU outing was underwhelming overall as per critics and audiences. The film also under-performed at the box-office in comparison to its predecessor. The actor followed up the year with David O Russell’s Amsterdam, which also turned to be a colossal bomb despite having who’s who from hollywood in its cast. A multistarrer at that, the Mystery comedy starring Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington was panned by the critics for its story, screenplay and tonal inconsistencies. However, Bale’s performance was still praised. The odds are really not in his favour this year, but there’s still a ray of hope in the form of ‘The Pale Blue Eye’.
‘The Pale Blue Eye’ is an upcoming American gothic horror mystery film directed by Scott Cooper, with whom Bale reunites for the third time professionally. Although the director’s previous outing Antlers (2021) was underwhelming on all fronts, his collaborations with Bale have been good watches. Be it Hostiles (2017) or Out of the Furnace (2013).
Besides, ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ is adapted from a 2003 novel of the same name by Louis Bayard. It is also a gothic mystery which has all probabilities to be a Netflix sensation because Gothic horror as a genre has enough and more takers. The story follows a veteran detective Augustus Landor as he investigates a series of murders at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York in the 1980s. He is aided by Edgar Allan Poe, a young cadet at the academy. The film also acts as an origin story of Edgar Allan Poe, a famous American writer. The film has an interesting story to base on, besides an exceptionally talented star-cast including Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsboroug, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Timothy Spall, and Robert Duvall.
From the looks of it, The Pale Blue Eye could turn out to be a real good film with another smashing performance from Christian Bale. The film could also salvage the setback the actor faced from the colossal bomb that Amsterdam was. Let us keep our fingers crossed as the film drops on Netflix on January 6th, 2023.
