A modern-day Indian royalty rom-com series ‘The Royals’ is coming to Netflix India next month after having unveiled a star studded cast last year.
Directed by Priyanka Ghosh and Nupur Asthana and written by Neha Veena Sharma, ‘The Royals’ is led by Bhumi Pednekar, making her series debut alongside Ishaan Khattar.
Rounding out the ensemble cast are Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra and Luke Kenny.
In ‘The Royals’ when Aviraaj Singh (Khattar), a polo playing, pleasure seeking, party prince, heir to the royal throne of Morpur, meets high functioning, tightly wound, ace CEO Sophie Kanmani Shekhar (Pednekar), sparks and insults fly as they reluctantly come together to save his royally dysfunctional family from financial ruin and to save her own leading startup of luxury home stays in India from shark investment bankers.
Two worlds, one of dwindling aristocracy, and the other of racing capitalism converge and throw up a whirlwind of clashing ambitions, steamy romance and fashion forward Instagrammable moments.
The first look and teaser of ‘The Royals’ have been an extravagant affair on the outlook but seem to lack the spark needed to create that sense of intrigue or excitement for that matter.
Infact ‘The Royals’ looks too unrealistic which makes it hard to form a connection with the common Indian audience and will rather cater to modern urban and young niche viewers.
That’s why ‘The Royals’ might find it pretty hard to rule over the audience’s heart upon its debut on Netflix India this 9th May, 2025.
At the same time many seek entertainment as a form of escapism from the mundanity of regular life and if ‘The Royals’ turns out to be as fun and feisty as it promises, it might end up gaining traction but only when it gets good word of mouth.
So yes, ‘The Royals’ is quite a gamble by Netflix India and it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
