Believe it or not, running theatres is not the most profitable business, as most of its profits come from food and beverage sales. With the rise of OTT platforms, the number of moviegoers is already declining. Although Kalki became a blockbuster at the box office, it gave theater chains a much-needed breath of fresh air.
Now, a bunch of movies are releasing on Indian screens, and these films might just save the theatre business. India is having a five-day weekend, starting from Independence Day, which falls on a Friday, and it will end on Monday with Rakhi Purnima. These five days are perfect to accommodate the long list of movies that are clashing on August 15th.
The struggling film industry is banking on this five-day Independence Day weekend to revive its fortunes, with the release of films like Stree 2, Vedaa, and Thangalaan. Despite high expectations, particularly for franchise films, the industry’s reliance on holiday weekends underscores its ongoing challenges in attracting consistent audiences.
For Hindi audiences, there are three big releases: Stree 2, which is by far the biggest, followed by Vedaa and Khel Khel Main. Even in terms of southern content, the Telugu industry will face tough competition between Mr. Bachchan and Double iSmart, as both promise a boost in sales on the 14th.
Thangalaan is also there to entertain the Tamil audience. In the eastern part of India, Bengali audiences will have Padatik and Babli. Looking at the releases, August 15th promises a solid opening for all the titles. Stree 2 alone promises an opening of 45 to 50 crore. The others might bring in significant numbers together as well.
Keeping the monetary aspects aside, experts are expecting around 5 to 5.5 million people to visit theaters during these five days, which is an astronomical number for Indian cinema.
