Ranbir Kapoor is a name to reckon with in the Indian film industry and it’s pretty evident from his filmography that’s embellished with multiple smashing hits. But in the beginning of his career Kapoor did a film that didn’t get the same reception at the box office as his films do now.
That does not mean it wasn’t good, infact it is a great fun watch that did not get the deserved attention at that point in time. We are talking about ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’ (2009) that brought back director Shimit Amin, writer Jaideep Sahni and producer Aditya Chopra together after Chak De! India (2007).
‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’ follows Harpreet Singh Bedi who has just graduated and decides to dive into the world of sales for an adventurous career. But after being ridiculed by his colleagues and his employer, he plans to operate a parallel company without their knowledge. What follows is a fun sequence of events muddled with risks and rewards.
‘Rocket Singh’ has one of the best performances of Ranbir Kapoor where he gets into the character very smoothly. Though the film was criticised by some for its screenplay and pacing, it is the brilliance of its concept, story and execution that the former flaws can be ignored easily.
The film has everything that qualifies it for an entertaining and engaging watch. There’s laughter, emotions, a bit of romance and thrill too but above all what stands out is how simplicity and smartness together drive Kapoor’s character and the film.
If you haven’t seen ‘Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year’, you are missing out on one of those really great Bollywood movies that make you feel good without getting overdramatic, preachy or emotional. Do give it a go on Prime Video!
