Considering how well Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ series was appreciated by both the audience and the critics, there was huge anticipation for its prequel series ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ ever since we got to see the teaser at the end of season 2’s last episode. And now that it’s here, people wish it didn’t exist.
‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ is surprisingly bad. And no, it’s not because of the massive disapproval targeted at the series and makers following Henry Cavill’s exit from the series but for actual reasons. The prequel series is sloppily written, the dialogues are predictable and for a Netflix production, the series’s visual effects are shockingly sub-par in many instances, especially towards the final fight. Here are some reactions:
Goddamnit this show is infuriatingly bad

Confirmed, i binged Witcher all night when it was out, this crap i managed to watch only 3 episodes, and gave up…this is massacre of the franchise. She Hulk and this crap lowered a bar so much, even if Netflix do a remake of CATS it will be a masterpiece.

The series is seemingly an unnecessary addition to the Witcher world. Sure, people were very interested in getting to know how the ‘Conjunction of the Spheres’ happened and how the first kind of witcher came to be but did the makers forget what made the original series a huge success was its writing? From Geralt’s transition from a solo hunter to becoming a father figure to ciri and Yennifer’s powerful character development over the two seasons, the visual effects and performances worked only because they were supported by good writing. And that may exactly be what ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ lacks. In fact, many compare the series’ writing to badly written fanfic. How great it would have been had it been an exaggeration!
It’s not just the audience, but the critics seem to be unimpressed by the fantasy series as well. Alongside the expected 10% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a low 35% critics. Another gripe with the people is how the series has gone woke. The forced representation is blatantly obvious, and with no good screenplay to incorporate it into the series, it looks like another unwanted dose of personal politics into popular pop culture, much like what happened with Star Wars.
The series is undoing the great run that Netflix had towards this year’s end with the masterpiece Rian Johnson’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story’. Did the makers conduct any trial screening of the series before releasing it on Christmas day? Above anything, it’s like a critic opined- the absolute legend that is Michelle Yeoh didn’t deserve to end her year like this, not after the once-in-a-lifetime performance she gave in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’.
