While Netflix has for some time been the unanimous streaming leader for international content with its content like ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Witcher’, ‘House of Cards’, and ‘Ozark’, things may be changing. And at the center of the change, may be the world’s largest online retailer- Amazon.
As great news for sci-fi fans, as per Variety, Amazon has green-lit a web series regarding the Blade Runner film franchise for Prime Video. The show has been titled ‘Blade Runner: 2099′ and it is assumed that the series’ events take place 50 years after the events of the Ryan Rosling movie titled ‘Blade Runner 2049’.
But does this move signal just another green-lighting of a big-budget web series based on a beloved film franchise? Or is there more to this than what meets the eye?
Prime Video as of late has been upping its game in India. It has tasted huge success in India with contents like ‘Shershaah’, ‘Drishyam 2’, ‘Soorarai Pottru’, ‘Jai Bhim’ and has recently announced a slate of Indian Originals, while its competitor Netflix is reportedly not doing so great in regards to Indian content.
With big-budget web series such as the ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’,’ The Boys’, and ‘Wheel of Time’ set to return to the streamer and upcoming biggies to be released like Citadel starring Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, Prime Video is steadily improving its international content as well. While the content is in no way comparable to Netflix’s own content library as of now, Amazon has been steadily building its international content library for quite some time.
Green-lighting of the Blade Runner series may be seen as another step forward in dethroning Netflix for the Streaming Crown. With the acquisition of MGM and the ordering of multiple big ventures, Amazon in a few years will be in a position to give Netflix a run for its money. With Disney+ too announcing big projects at the D23 Expo, the streaming wars are getting more exciting.
Netflix still has a few tricks up its sleeve. Its announcements at TUDUM 2022 may give Netflix some respite in this bad patch. Among all these speculations, there’s only one certain thing: there has never been a better time for content and content creators in the immediate past. And unnecessary to say, we are not complaining!
