Gaana, the music streaming platform, has launched ‘Gaana HotShots‘ – a short video space akin to TikTok which was earlier banned by the Indian government. The platforms built for Indian content creators will offer emerging and established influencers an opportunity to migrate to an Indian platform and build a massive audience. With this move Gaana has joined the #MakeInTrend.
With over 150 million users, Gaana is by far the biggest player to enter the short video space in the short time since the ban of TikTok. Gaana HotShots allows Indian content enthusiasts intuitive, seamless and snappy tools to create and share short viral videos and stories. It will offer ‘HotShot Challenges’ along with music, comedy and dance by HotShot influencers, celebs and international artists, that will cater to the ever growing appetite of Indians for entertaining short-videos. The app claims to offer the scale and the infrastructure to reach a massive audience that thrives on digital entertainment, given that these are engaged users on the core music streaming platform.

TikTok, before being banned by the government along with 58 other Chinese apps, had the largest market in India and dominated the market of short video platforms. With it’s huge user base of over 150 million monthly active users, Gaana seems to be in the best position to take TikTok’s place.
Since the ban, several TikTok clones have flooded the market. Indian app Chingari has crossed over 1 mn downloads on Google Play Store. Mitron has recorded over 17 mn users. Further, Trell recorded 12 mn downloads while Roposo recorded over 10 mn users and Sharechat’s Moj app garnered over 10 mn downloads in six days.
