It was reported a few months back that the ‘It’ horror films’ prequel series is in work for HBO Max. In the latest developments regarding the project, the series has finally got its showrunners. The series, as per Variety, will be helmed by the actor-screenwriters Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane.
The prequel series, currently called ‘Welcome to Derry’ will reportedly begin in the 1960s in the time leading up to the events of ‘It: Part One’, which was based on the Stephen King horror novel. The story is also said to include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.
Andy Muschietti, who directed the two ‘It’ movies will, as per reports, co-produce the series, along with Fuchs. He is also rumored to be directing the first episode of the series. Since the movies were such major successes grossing over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, it was no surprise when the announcement came regarding the prequel series being made regarding the premise and Pennywise. Regardless, the hype among the fans is sizable.
The first film of the series was released in 2017. Upon release, the film was critically acclaimed and loved by the audience, quickly becoming the highest-grossing horror film ever( unadjusted for inflation). While the movie showed the leads as children, the next film in the series showed them as adults, with the story taking place 27 years after the defeat of Pennywise.
Jason Fuchs is best known for his work in 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and 2012’s ‘Ice Age: Continental drift’. He will also be writing and producing Apple’s biggie ‘Argylle’ starring an ensemble cast led by Henry Cavill. Kane’s recent writing credits include shows like ‘Moonhaven’ and ‘Tokyo Vice’. He has also written multiple episodes of shows like ‘Warrior’.
One of the significant draws for the films was Bill Skarsgård’s arresting portrayal of Pennywise the Clown. While it is not sure if he will return to the series, it is certainly hoped so by many. With WB having produced the two films, it’s TV division Warner Bros. Television will be producing the series.
