Timothee Chalamet is undoubtedly one of the best actors in Hollywood right now. Given how his latest project, Wonka, has opened in theatres, the Dune 2 actor is all set to become the next big true film star.
Wonka minted $39 million domestically and over $152 million in total in its debut weekend against a heavy budget of $125 million. This scenario shows people are interested in seeing Timothee Chalamet on the big screen. The film is all set to become a box-office success during its theatrical run. It has two more days until ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ arrives in theatres, which may complicate things for Wonka. However, many box office pundits believe that the film will hold its ground despite facing direct competition from the upcoming Jason Momoa starrer, largely due to the global prominence and exceptional talent of Timothee Chalamet.
Before playing the legendary character of Willy Wonka on the big screen, Chalamet managed to earn several interesting roles. In his debut year, 2014, he got small roles in ‘Men, Women & Children, Interstellar, and Worst Friends. His career skyrocketed after starring in ‘Call Me By Your Name’ in 2017, which earned him the nomination for Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards. Since then, the actor has been seen in both indie projects and big blockbusters. Some of his biggest projects include Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One. So far, Chalamet has had a terrific acting career. And ‘Wonka’ will indeed make it better.
People have started noticing the ongoing trend of big Hollywood studios developing more reboot projects or spinoffs belonging to prominent film franchises. This is why their interest in these types of projects has noticeably reduced. But Wonka has surprised everyone after receiving an impressive opening weekend.
Apart from his popularity, Chalamet’s acting performance in ‘Wonka’ has also played a significant role in ensuring its success. Willy Wonka is indeed a difficult character to portray, largely due to his complex persona, which is a blend of eccentricity, charm, and a bit of darkness. His predecessors, Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, portrayed the iconic Roald Dahl character in their own ways. The former’s version of the character was more playful and unpredictable. On the other hand, Depp brought out Willy Wonka’s unorthodox and eerie personality. It must have been a daunting task for Chalamet to make the character his own instead of borrowing too heavily from the works of Wilder and Depp. And he pulled it off quite nicely.
Dune: Part Two is Timothee Chalamet’s next project, which will surely outperform its 2021 predecessor, considering the film’s scope and Villeneuve’s ambitions associated with the sequel. The box office success of both Wonka and Dune: Part Two may make Chalamet the next big true star in Hollywood. Stay tuned for more updates.
