Disney+Hotstar has revealed the first poster and the official trailer of its new original ‘World’s Best’. It is written by Utkarsh Ambudkar, Jamie King and directed by Roshan Sethi. The film has a cast of actors like Utkarsh Ambudkar, Manny Magnus, Punam Patel, Jake Choi, Max Malas, Piper Wallace and Kayla Njeri. The film will be premiering on Disney+Hotstar on the 23rd of June.
It will be a musical so the music has to be pretty good. The music for the film is composed by Charlie B. Wilder. The film tells the story of Prem Patel,a mathematical genius who is going through regular adolescence problems. He discovered that his father, who passed away recently, was an amazing rapper. Prem wants to risk everything and try out rapping to find out if hip-hop is in his veins. He sees imaginative visions of rapping with his father…and the story goes on.
There is something more between the lines of this simple teenage story of an immigrant. It is not new for Hollywood to make projects with numerous Indian actors in the cast or having some jokes with Indian references to make the films more desirable to the huge Indian audience. There is a big number of movies and shows that are entirely based on Indians or Indian-Americans with lots of stereotypes or facelessness. With shows like ‘Shantaram’ or ‘Never Have I Ever’ for India and ‘Ms Marvel’ for Pakistan, the foreign OTT giants have tried to target the audience of the East by attempting to create relatability over and again. Only time will tell if ‘World’s Best’ is a genuine attempt for storytelling or one for seducing the audience.
