Big movie, TV studios and writers who were on strike have reached a deal. This is good news because it means Hollywood can start making movies and shows again. The strike has been going on for a long time, causing a lot of problems.
The writers’ union, called the Writers Guild of America (WGA), said that the members showed their power by going on strike for 146 days. The strike almost became the longest in WGA history, just a little short of the 1988 strike that lasted 154 days.
The exact terms of the deal are not known yet, but the WGA says it’s a good one with benefits and protections for writers in all areas.
However, the strike is not over just yet. The writers can’t go back to work until the WGA says so. But for now, they have stopped picketing, which is a kind of protest. The WGA is encouraging its members to support the actors’ strike instead, which is also happening in Hollywood. The actors’ union, called SAG-AFTRA, represents about 160,000 actors and has been on strike since July.
Both of these strikes have cost a lot of money, more than $5 billion in total, and it has affected other businesses too, like restaurants and shops. In New York, 11 major productions were disrupted, leading to a loss of $1.3 billion and 17,000 jobs.
People are hopeful that the studios will also reach a deal with the actors now that they’ve made an agreement with the writers.
The writers had concerns about their pay and job opportunities, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence. They wanted to make sure that movies and shows were written by humans, not machines. This was one of the last things they needed to work out in their agreement. Let’s pray that actors also get their due done.
But Hollywood is not restarting anytime soon.
