One of Hindi Cinema’s biggest production houses ‘Yash Raj Films‘ celebrates its 50th year in film business this year. One of the, if not the biggest movie studios to exist in India was established in the year 1970 by Yash Chopra. Although the production house were to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in the year 2020, covid-19 pushed the line-up two years further to 2022. A line-up that looked like a guaranteed year of celebration has now turned into a year of back to back gargantuan failures for the production house.
The YRF50 line-up began with Bunty Aur Babli 2 starring Rani Mukherji and Saif Ali Khan that released at the theatres on 19th November, 2021. Made on a budget of 45 crores, the film hardly managed to stack 20 crores. The production house followed up its flop streak with Jayeshbhai Jordaar starring Ranveer Singh that released on 13th May, 2022 after the omicron wave set-back. Made on a budget of 86 crores, the film hardly cracked 20 crores at the box-office. One would say if you fail at first, third time is the charm. But it seems like for YRF, even the third time charm didn’t work out. Akshay Kumar starrer Samrat Prithviraj, made on a budget of over 250 crores wrapped under 70 crores. When Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Shamshera‘ first look and teaser released, people hoped for the disaster phase of Yash Raj Films to be over but things remained unchanged. The film not only has been gaining bad reviews but also is doing badly at the box office. With around 30 crores collection over the weekend, Shamshera is also learly heading towards a flop verdict.
If having four back to back flops weren’t enough, the production house already has a backlog to clear with two clearly lackluster looking releases. Vicky Kaushal and Manushi Chhillar starrer ‘The Great Indian Family’ directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya who is infamous for Thugs of Hindostan and Junaid Khan’s (Aamir Khan’s son) debut film directed by Siddharth P Malhotra. It’s high time the production house gets introspective of their terrible choices in the last 4-5 years. It’s not only important to invest in crores, but also important to invest in good writers and directors. The only blockbusters they have churned out since ages are Tiger Zinda Hai and War.
Things are definitely looking rocky ahead for the production house with only Siddharth Anand directorial Pathaan starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone and Maneesh Sharma directorial Tiger 3 starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif as the silver lining. Even if both films turn out underwhelming, the spy universe tag and already readied crossovers of both superstars in each other’s films are going to keep the momentum of both tentpole films intact. The YRF Spy universe already has 3 success stories namely Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai and War to its belt when it comes to the spy universe. But it’s still unpredictable if both films are just smokes and no fire. Pathaan is scheduled to release on January 25th, 2022 and Tiger 3 releases worldwide on 21st April, 2022. Stay tuned for more updates.
