You Season 5 has topped Netflix’s Top 10 global streaming chart. However, the return of Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg has seen a serious viewership drop for the series, reinforcing why it was the right time to end the show with its fifth season.
Taking inspiration from Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name, You was picked up by Netflix after the successful release of Season 1 on Lifetime. This prominent psychological thriller stars Badgley as Joe Goldberg, a stalker of women with a dangerous tendency to kill anyone who gets in his way.
According to Netflix, You Season 5 was the most-watched English-language series for the week of April 21–27. It garnered over 85.2 million viewing hours and attracted more than 10.1 million viewers. It also ranked as the No. 1 show in 37 countries, including India, and entered the Top 10 list in 88 others.
However, what’s disappointing about the latest season’s performance is that it failed to top the charts in major markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia. Another setback is that the viewership for Season 5 is significantly lower than that of previous seasons.
Season 3 opened with 133.1 million viewing hours, while Season 4 premiered with 92.1 million. This downward trend shows that the show’s popularity has been declining, and it was likely the right call for Netflix to end the series with Season 5.
Even though the show remained strong enough to debut at No. 1, the decline in viewership is evident. These numbers suggest that Netflix made a smart decision in concluding the series, despite its potential to continue performing well.
Moreover, the critical reception for You Season 5 has been mixed-to-positive, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it an 81% “Fresh” score, noticeably lower than Season 3’s 96% and Season 4’s 92%. Stay tuned for more updates.
