‘Raincoat’ is one of the masterpieces filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh made during his short lifetime. It is adapted from the short story ‘The Gift Of The Magi’ by O. Henry. ‘Raincoat’ was later adapted into English by filmmaker Mithaq Kazimi. Raincoat stars Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles and has other actors like Annu Kapoor, Surekha Sikri, Mauli Ganguly in important roles. The movie is streaming on Hoichoi.
Raincoat tells the story of two estranged lovers who meet unexpectedly long after their separation. They both are shocked by this sudden encounter and many revelations about each others’ situations await them. The lyrics of the songs are written by Gulzar and his voice is used in the movie for the recitation of poems, which is a treat to the ears. Some of the songs are written by Rituparno himself and classical singer Shubha Mudgal gives her voice to the songs. Debojyoti Mishra composed the music of the film. All the songs are background numbers and they are something that make the watch worth remembering.
Almost the entire film is shot inside one house. The whole shoot was completed in 17 days. The film is melancholic and it is very obvious that it did not work very well at the box office, but it garnered the appreciation of critics and intellectual cinephiles. A filmmaker from the Bengali film industry takes two of the strongest actors from Bollywood in the peak time of their career and signs them for his first Hindi film in the most unconventional roles.
The performances are beyond amazing and the chemistry between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ajay Devgn will steal your heart.
