NBC is releasing a television series based on the life of professional wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson called Young Rock. The series is created by Nahnatchka Khan and Dwayne Johnson and is set to premiere on the channel as well as on their OTT streaming platform, Peacock next month. Dwayne Johnson will be portraying himself along with three young actors, all of them depicting various stages of his life.
Young Adrian Groulx will portray a 10-year-old Dwayne Johnson, Bradley Constant will portray a 15-year-old Dwayne Johnson, Uli Latukefu will play an 18 to 20-year-old Dwayne Johnson and Dwayne Johnson will portray a “fictional older version” of himself in NBC’s Young Rock. This comedy series will show The Rock’s journey from a young boy to a grown man who eventually goes on to become one of the most famous wrestlers of all time.
The series is set in a fictional 2032, when presidential candidate, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson looks back at his extraordinary life through the eyes of family and friends. Young Rock will explore Johnson’s childhood years and the influence wrestling icons had on him at a young age, his rebellious teenage years while attending highschool in Pennsylvania and his football years when he was part of the University of Miami’s powerhouse.
The promotion for the series has been quite epic (just like The Rock himself) over the past few months. During the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, an inflatable featuring Dwayne Johnson in his 20s wearing a fanny pack (taken ditto from a famous picture of The Rock’s floating around in the internet) was unveiled as part of NBC’s promotion. The network also dropped a teaser trailer on Young Rock, almost a week ago. Check it out at the end of the article.
We most likely won’t get Young Rock here in India soon, but a lot of NBC series have made their rounds in India through Netflix. Hopefully we will get to see the series, if NBC agrees to sell the international distribution rights for the series to Netflix or hopefully any other international/ regional OTT company running in India.
Young Rock will premiere on the NBC Channel and the OTT Platform, Peacock on February 16th 2021.
