While this is not exactly new “news” – Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar have been using YouTube to experiment with their projects. By using creative memes, videos, trailers and teasers on YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have managed to garner the attention of most Indians. Amazon Prime is heavily prominent on social media (Twitter in particular), while Netflix has recently released a brilliant promotional video for the fifth season of ‘Money Heist’, which featured actors from Bollywood, Tamil and Telugu film industries. This is nothing new. However, with their latest show, ‘Aryan & Meera‘, Netflix India is taking on another crazy experiment.
Netflix has released many short stories/ films on their Netflix India account on YouTube as a smart way to show non-subscribing Indians what they are missing out on. They have also brought on famous Indian celebrities and YouTubers to promote the channel as well as their upcoming content. While these videos have been popular, they have not had the desired effect. Still, Netflix India managed to garner a huge following on YouTube – 14.2 million. This is a huge following for a side-channel compared to Netflix’s main YouTube channel which has 21 million. This brings us to ‘Aryan & Meera’.
With Netflix understanding that there are a lot more subscribers on their Indian YouTube Channel compared to the number of Indian subscribers in Netflix, releasing their latest Indian web series directly for streaming on the NETFLIX INDIA YOUTUBE channel is a stroke of genius (and crazy experimental). Whether it will be popular will depend on the quality of the show (the show quality shouldn’t decrease from other “standard Netflix originals”). Only time will tell for now.
This will help the OTT in two ways. If anyone wants to watch the show, they can subscribe to their YouTube for free to check it out (which might not even be required). Still, this will increase the popularity of the show. The second thing would be that Netflix will be able to release its regional content while still generating revenue (if done correctly, they can generate profit as well).
Still, ‘Aryan & Meera’ will premiere in a few days, on 25th August 2021 on the official YouTube account of Netflix India.
