Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a major player in the media industry, has stirred up a legal tussle with Star India, a subsidiary of Walt Disney, over alleged breaches in the ICC TV rights agreement. The dispute centres on payments and contract fulfilment regarding the lucrative ICC media rights.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises wants back Rs 68.54 crore from Star India, saying Star didn’t follow the rules of their agreement. Zee says Star didn’t get the needed approvals and didn’t sign important papers, so the agreement isn’t valid anymore. How interesting?
But Star India says Zee didn’t pay up like they were supposed to. Zee was supposed to pay the first part of $203.5 million and also put around Rs 17 crore in a bank as a guarantee, but they didn’t.
The agreement they signed in August 2022 let Zee show ICC TV events for men and under-19s until 2027. Star first got these rights for $3 billion and then let Zee use them for $1.5 billion, which shows how big the deal was.
This fight comes at a tricky time for the media world. Zee tried to merge with Sony’s Culver Max Entertainment, but it didn’t work out. Star is getting ready to join Viacom18, which is part of Reliance Industries, making things more complicated.
Reliance might think Star is worth less now, maybe up to $2 billion less, because of the problems with the ICC deal. Disney bought Star for over $15 billion in 2019, and this fight shows how important that deal was.
