After a long time, Zee5 apparently made some efforts with ‘Logout’ to get out of the slump it has been facing since long. But was it enough? Apparently not!
In the beginning of April, Zee5 brought the film version of its old series ‘Kaafir’. Why it did so is clearly not known because certainly nobody wanted it.
Next up there was the launch of licensed Tamil horror adventure film ‘Kingston’. Touted to India’s first marine fantasy film, ‘Kingston’ wasn’t just a box office bomb but also received horrible reviews from critics and therefore to expect much from its OTT debut would be stupidity.
It was the next title that was the highlight for Zee5 in April. Babli Khan starrer ‘Logout’, a cautionary thriller about the perils of social media and digital obsession. Though the film had its flaws but it was aptly suited for current times where digital obsession is on the rise and unfortunately Zee5 failed to utilise the film’s full potential. This further underscores Zee5’s challenge in turning bold concepts into cultural phenomena, an aspect where its competitors are doing pretty well.
There was also Malayalam action drama ‘Daveee’ that made way to Zee5 post theatrical run. Despite being a well made entertaining sports drama with positive reviews the film barely made any waves on its OTT debut.
Lastly, Zee5 launched ‘Ayyana Mane’ an original Kannada crime thriller web series, the first if it’s kind. The show has got some decent reviews but isn’t grand enough to capture larger viewer interest. But yes, Zee5 does deserve some appreciation for the attempt here.
Overall, Zee5 could have done something bigger this April, if only it had a better marketing strategy for its originals like Logout and Ayyana Mane. So yeah as much as we would love to give it brownie points for the efforts, Zee5 needs to do much better than this.
