April was mixed bag of a month for Zee5 with nothing much exciting or promising on the original front but a few good licensed films that did their job well.
Going chronologically, in the first week of April, acclaimed Tamil film ‘Ayothi’ premiered on Zee5 and as expected roped in decent viewing numbers for the platform.
The second week of April had a lot more content dropping on Zee5. There was Bengali film ‘Projapati’, Malayalam romance drama ‘Pranaya Vilasam’, Punjabi comedy drama ‘Mitran Da Naa Chalda’, Tamil horror comedy ‘Ghosty’ and Zee5 original film ‘Mrs. Undercover’.
Amongst these Radhika Apte starrer direct-to-digital action-comedy thriller ‘Mrs. Undercover’ is one that needs special mention. Not that the film was much good but because it was one out of two original Hindi content that Zee5 had to offer this April, but failed to deliver. The only highlight of the film were the strong performances that salvaged the sloppy script.
The penultimate week of April was again a dull one with only two titles, first, Malayalam drama ‘Vedikettu’ and the second, a Zee5 original Tamil crime mystery show ‘Oru Kodai Murder Mystery’. While the former went mostly unnoticed, the latter wasn’t any great either. In fact it was the cast and ending of ‘Oru Kodai Murder Mystery’ that saved the tiring thriller.
Coming to the last of week of April, Zee5 came up with a Telugu original drama ‘Vyavastha’ that despite its interesting premise could not do well because of the sloppy execution. Other than that there was Zee5 Hindi original film ‘U-Turn’ and licensed films like Malayalam action family thriller ‘Pakalum Paathiravum’ and Tamil crime action thriller ‘Viduthalai: Part 1’.
‘U-Turn’, a remake of the 2016 Kannada hit of the same name, had an engaging plot and lead star Alaya F’s performance steals the show but it’s the messy second half of the film that brings it down.
Another film that needs a that needs to be talked about is Vetrimaaran’s ‘Viduthalai: Part 1’ that premiered on Zee5 post its acclaimed theatrical run along with director’s cut and extended version. The film has received huge praises for its characterization, performances, plot, technical aspects, background music and cinematography.
All in all April was both good and bad for Zee5, with a few good regional films making their debut on the platform. It’s the original front that Zee5 needs to work upon seriously given how for the past few months it has offered nothing outstanding to its viewers.
