The OTT giants have not stepped into the Bengali OTT market as there is Hoichoi’s monopoly here and there are more streamers like AddaTimes and Chorki coming into the scene with big efforts.
But what Zee5 has done over the years in creating a wonderful library of Bengali films is really commendable. On Prime Video, some old classics are available to stream, some contemporary pieces are there on Netflix but they are all scattered without any organisation. Zee5, on the other hand, has created a wonderful segment of Bengali films with old and contemporary titles and even some originals.
The Bengali movies include ‘Kidnap’, ‘8/12’, ‘Bhalobashar Shohor’, ‘Sanjhbati’, ‘Dictionary’, ‘Asur’, ‘Tiki taka’ etc. The originals include movies like ‘Aranyadeb’, and there are shows like ‘Kantaye Kantaye’, ‘Seven’, ‘Sabash Feluda’, ‘Abar Proloy’, ‘Shwet Kali’ and all of them were considerably successful. No other big OTT platform has had this much success in West Bengal and indeed Zee5 has emerged as a tough competitor for Chorki and Hoichoi.
Well, it is all the better for fans of Bengali movies and shows and the more effort platforms like Zee5 give into regional languages the better. Hopefully, in the near future Zee5 will contribute to the industry by coming up with interesting content in the OTT industry in Bengali.
