For Zee5 nothing very exciting happened in March but it did bring in some original content bit that too could not managed to lift the month up even a little. In terms of licensed films too there wasnt anything much notable.
March started with the premiere of the official remake of a very acclaimed 2021 Malayalam film ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’. While the original Malayalam version is available for streaming on platforms like Neestream and Amazon Prime Video, the remake is now streaming in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada on Zee5. Despite the film’s good reputation the response was a little underwhelming where it could gain only 50 million streaming minutes even after more than over two weeks of its premiere.
On the same day Zee5 also launched its grand epic original series ‘Taj: Divided by Blood’ which although managed to take in the viewing numbers of 250 million+ watch minutes within 10 days of its premiere, the series did not pass the critics test who found the show to be filled with blood, gore and sex but limited substance.
Then there were films like ‘Raymo’ (Kannada), ‘Middle Class Love’ (Hindi), ‘Boudi Canteen’ (Bengali), ‘Bommai Nayagi’ (Tamil), ‘Am I Next’ (Hindi), ‘Writer Padmabhushan’ (Telugu), ‘Poovan’ (Malayalam) which were barely noticed.
During the last week of March, Zee5 focused on its original content slate and brought out web shows like ‘Sengalam’ (Tamil) and ‘Untied Kacche’ (Hindi) and films like ‘Kanjoos Makhichoos’ (Hindi). There was also one licensed Tamil film ‘Agilan’ that came out on the last day of the month and similar to its theatrical response the film is not doing much on OTT as well.
‘Sengalam’ was predictable but a harmless political drama and made for a decent one time watch for its overall story and decent performances. On the other hand Hindi highlights of March for Zee5, both ‘Kanjoos Makhichoos’ as a film and ‘United Kacche’ as a show, failed to create any impact despite a good star cast.
Overall, March was very dull month for Zee5 and whether it’s the original content slate or licensed films, the platform had nothing great to offer.
