May was a busy month for Zee5 with many titles coming out in it. But quantity doesn’t guarantee quality and that’s what has happened for Zee5 this month. Though it wasn’t all bad and there were some things to look out for.
In the first week of May, Zee5 dropped the second season of its original series ‘Broken News’ which despite being bigger and exaggerated this time still managed to engage. The show offered an incisive look into journalism with its immersive narration and fabulous performances. In the downside it became a little monotonous at times with occasional exaggeration and cinematic liberties.
Then during the second week of May came three titles: ‘8 A. M. Metro’, ‘Gadera’ and ‘S.I.T Special Investigation Team’. Releasing almost a year after its theatrical release, ‘8 A. M. Metro’ received positive reviews from the audience and acclaim for the performances of the lead stars Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher. The other two titles did not create any buzz.
Next up was Adah Sharma’s ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story’ which after bombing at the box office continued the same trend on Zee5. Despite the streamer claiming big numbers for the film it did not do much and performed poorly.
On the same day, Telugu crime thriller series ‘Thalamai Seyalagam’ came to the platform and this Vasanth Balan political drama was dense and mostly engaging. Assertive performances, impressive writing and terrific attention to details were a plus for the show.
Towards the end of May came two titles: one, Randeep Hooda’s ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ and two, Sanjay Kapoor starrer ‘House of Lies’. The former was deemed as a film with propaganda and only the ones aligning with the ideology prefer to watch such content. On the other hand the latter did not create any wave.
With only one good enough title and others being passable or poor, May was a mixed bag for Zee5. The streamer was able to generate and attract viewers with aggressive marketing for some titles and at the end of the day that’s what matters in commercial terms. But Zee5 still needs to improve on the quality front if it wishes to gain loyal subscriber base.
