Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has dismissed recent reports of the termination of its merger with Sony Group Corp as “baseless and factually incorrect.” In an official statement on Tuesday, Zee affirmed its commitment to the proposed $10 billion merger with Sony.
Top media houses including Binged informed its readers that the merger of Sony and Zee might be terminated. But, now the official announcement has quashed the report.
The merger announced two years ago with the aim of creating India’s largest broadcast corporation, has faced hurdles, including disputes over leadership roles and legal challenges. The failure to meet certain legal conditions, known as conditions precedents (CP), has fueled tensions between the parties.
One major point of contention revolves around ZEEL MD Punit Goenka’s potential role as the CEO of the merged entity, pending the resolution of charges related to alleged fund misappropriation. In June, SEBI accused Goenka and Zee Group Chairman Subhash Chandra of diverting company funds, leading to a ban on Goenka’s board positions. However, the ban was lifted by the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) in October.
The combined entity, if the merger proceeds, is going to own more than 70 television channels, including OTT platforms like ZEE5 and Sony LIV, along with two film studios. The merger was announced back in 2021 and it is 2024 already. Let’s see how long it takes.
