In recent times, the Indian audience witnessed two events regarding mergers. The merger between Reliance and Hotstar ended on good terms, which was definitely a successful attempt. However, the merger between Zee and Sony didn’t end well.
On the surface, Zee may have had the best of ambitions to become a superpower in Indian entertainment and compete with the likes of Hotstar and Prime Video. However, reports surfaced that Zee was in massive debt, followed by allegations of ill practices by the top brass leaders.
Unfortunately, things went south with Sony, as Zee ended up with a minority stake and less control over the board. After two years, the merger went in vain. Now, Zee has to face the consequences.
To control the situation, the only way for organizations is to trim the workforce, and Zee is no different.
Punit Goenka, MD and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited’s Indian wing, will now focus on laying off 15% of the total workforce.
“In line with his overall strategic approach, the MD and CEO has initiated the process of rationalization of the workforce by 15%, that will prune the staff strength across the company to arrive at a streamlined team that is sharply focused on the set goals for the future,”
This trimming will also result in a smaller management team. The proposed structure aims to streamline operations for a cost-effective model, prioritizing speed and agility. It seeks to drive higher growth by focusing on performance and profitability, particularly in content creation.
Core business units will include broadcast, digital, films, and music. Emphasizing frugality, optimization, and quality content, team members will operate as partners, with potential elevations and increased responsibilities under Goenka’s leadership. Earlier this week, Goenka announced a voluntary 20% pay cut for himself.
How viable is this option?
Economic imbalances are always suffered by layoffs; one can’t ignore this side of corporations. Though this will stabilize the financial structure temporarily, it will have an effect on content production as well. Will Zee survive this? They possibly will, but if this persists for long, the flesh and bone will be gone, leaving only the skeleton of the system.
