Zoe Kravitz’ directorial debut starring her rumoured partner Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie in the lead starts rolling this summer. The Batman actress reworked on the script multiple times over the last five years following the allegations against Harvey Weinstein and rise of the #MeToo movement.
Supposedly a psychological thriller, “Pussy Island” centers around a cocktail waitress Frida, (played by Naomi Ackie), who sets out to seduce tech mogul Slater King ( played by Channing Tatum). Once Frida finds herself in Slater’s inner circle, she is invited to his private island that houses a sinister secret.
Kravitz told ELLE that the script was originally based on “the lack of conversation around the way women are treated specifically in the entertainment industry.” “I started writing it pre-#MeToo, pre-Harvey [Weinstein] in 2017. Then the world started to have the conversation, so [the script] changed a lot,” Kravitz said. “It became more about a power struggle and what that power struggle means. I rewrote it a million times. Now we’re like, ‘Holy shit. We’re doing this! ”
Kravitz also previously told DEADLINE that the title of the film ” means a lot of things.”
“The title was kind of a joke at first, this place where people would go, bring women, party and hang out. The story evolved into something else, but the title wound up having multiple meanings.” she said. When quizzed about Tatum’s casting who is also one of the co-producers of ‘Pussy Island’ , she noted “Chan was my first choice, the one I thought of when I wrote this “.
Zoe Kravitz was recently seen in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Kimi‘. She also has the much awaited Matt Reeves directorial ‘The Batman’ up for a worldwide release next month. On the other hand Channing Tatum is riding high on the success of his latest film ‘Dog’ that has already outdone it’s $15m budget in the opening weekend.
