Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par turned heads not for its story alone, but for the way it was released.
Skipping OTT giants, Khan opted for YouTube’s pay-per-view model, a gamble many thought would flop in India’s price-sensitive market.
Surprisingly, it worked.
The actor claims the film earned 20 times more than any other movie released under the same model in India, proving that audiences are willing to pay directly if the content and brand power are strong enough.
But here comes the twist: after setting an “alternative model” example, Khan is now ready to sell Sitaare Zameen Par to streaming platforms.
This after proudly turning down a ₹125 crore offer earlier. His argument? It’s about creating multiple revenue windows, first theatrical, then pay-per-view, and only later, OTT and satellite.
On paper, the logic is sound.
ln practice, it looks like a convenient backtrack. After all, if the YouTube model was so revolutionary, why return to the same OTT giants he once pushed aside?
Khan admits that, despite the “20x success,” the absolute figures don’t compare with the massive money OTT rights could fetch.
In short, the YouTube experiment was successful but not sustainable at scale. The bigger question now: was this about disrupting the system, or simply testing waters before cashing in? Either way, fans can finally expect an Aamir Khan film on OTT soon, though not without a bit of irony.
But, the experiment? It was beyond successful.
