Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rampant in today’s day and age and to be honest this is certainly just the beginning of it. While its effects are omnipresent, our entertainment and media sector ain’t untouched either.
The latest we heard of the use of AI was in Tamil film Vettaiyan where Amitabh Bachchan’s voice was dubbed using the AI technology after Prakash Raj’s voice over for his role in the film received backlash from the audience.
But this isn’t the first instance of using AI technology in the entertainment industry. We have earlier seen the use of AI in films and series like ‘Late Night With The Devil’, ‘Civil War’, ‘Secret Invasion’ and more.
So what’s the deal? Is it all bad?
The threat to human factor has been the biggest concern as many believe with AI taking over can lead to job displacement in the entertainment sector further resulting in economic instability of the sector. That’s because AI can be used to do multiple task in fraction of a time taken by any human.
These tasks can range from writing, editing, creating innovative storylines by analysing vast amount of data across books, movies, cultural and social trends around the globe and more in least amount of time. Moreover, enhanced visuals can be created using AI driven CGI and animation. The AI tool can also be affectively applied to study audience’s preferences and accordingly create content and its marketing and promotional stuff.
But apart from loss of genuine human connection and sensibility in such works which might make them feel too formulaic and hollow, there’s also the matter of ethical concerns surrounding intellectual property rights, creative ownership, and authenticity.
So yes, the issues are there and they are bad to say the least. AI is a very powerful and innovative tool and how it’s used will determine the future of not just the entertainment sector but many others too. To avoid the threat, there needs to be a collective effort in saving the humane aspects of all that we do and stand for.
