The ongoing ODI series between India and Australia has been disappointing for Indian fans so far. However, what has frustrated fans the most is the excessive use of virtual ad slots.
Social media platforms (such as Twitter (X)) are currently buzzing with viewer outrage, criticising the service provider for an aggressive ad strategy that many feel has crossed the line, severely impacting the quality and flow of the live match experience.
The modern spectator is familiar with digital overlays of ads on pitch boundaries and on the field of play. This technology, known as virtual advertising, allows different regions to see different sponsors in the same space, thereby maximising revenue. However, fans of the ongoing IND vs AUS series are complaining that JioHotstar’s implementation is exceptionally frustrating and disruptive.
Viewers have reported that the virtual ad placements often appear poorly rendered, with visible glitches and abrupt transitions. This digital interference is particularly annoying when overlaid directly onto the pitch or too close to the live action.
We’re watching more ads than cricket.
Every inch of the screen is sold. Indian broadcasters have turned the game into a money-printing circus with zero respect for viewers, just pure greed. pic.twitter.com/0Vd5hWDuIG

I don't have problem with ads. Money needed to survive the game.
But hire a developer to fix the ad slots dangling , mainly when showing replays. Thats killing the experience @JioHotstar https://t.co/8Su8FLjBQx

Exactly, again @StarSportsIndia ruining cricket watching experience on an Australian ground!! The digital ad banners all around the field, at every possible camera angle completely spoils the view. Australia series used to be a viewing treat but now that’s gone. #INDvsAUS pic.twitter.com/FxFjQei5wQ

Quality, ugly digital graphics with that Skoda car coming in between, poor tharki scorecard at the bottom, ads stopping midway with the bowler almost at the crease to bowl the first ball. @JioHotstar @StarSportsIndia showing match in between ads. #AUSvIND https://t.co/KPjuoTUmKx

While ads are expected during breaks, viewers are now seeing the same repetitive virtual campaigns flashing across the screen even during live overs.
Given the hype surrounding the India–Australia clash, this strategy appears to be an attempt to heavily monetise the live stream, which is being offered free of charge to a massive audience. However, many viewers argue that the sheer volume and intrusiveness of these ads turn the “free” experience into a frustrating, low-quality product.
The current backlash against JioHotstar serves as a crucial reminder: revenue growth cannot come at the cost of user experience. Cricket fans are passionate, and their viewing pleasure is paramount. If digital enhancements turn into digital detriments, the platform risks alienating the very audience it seeks to serve. Stay tuned for more updates.
