Talking about global domination in streaming, Netflix is still the undisputed ruler of the realm. They’ve shaped viewing habits, turned shows into cultural events, and shadowed platforms like Prime Video or JioCinema/Hotstar in almost every way that matters.
But things are about to change.
Amazon has quietly made a move that could reshape how Prime Video plays this game.
They’ve hired Peter Friedlander, the man who helped Netflix build its empire of originals. And the list is long.
His fingerprints are on Stranger Things, The Queen’s Gambit, Ozark, and Wednesday, shows that not only pulled viewers in but became pop-culture juggernauts.
Here’s the irony: Amazon is now borrowing from the very DNA that once made Netflix untouchable.
After years of spending billions (nearly $19 billion last year alone), Amazon still hasn’t cracked the code. Sure, they’ve got The Boys, The Rings of Power, and access to Bond, but none of it has given them the same cultural gravity. Prime Video still feels like an add-on to your Amazon package, not a destination.
And that’s why Friedlander matters.
He knows how to build shows people talk about, obsess over, and keep paying for. But here’s the catch, Netflix itself has already moved beyond this stage. It’s scaling ad revenue, experimenting with gaming, and finding ways to grow profits. Amazon, in a way, is chasing a Netflix strategy that’s already evolved.
So, the question is: will this shift finally help Prime Video stand shoulder to shoulder with Netflix, or is it another case of arriving late to the party after the playlist has already changed?
Time will tell.
