Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom is set for its OTT premiere on Netflix on August 27. After a disappointing theatrical run, the film is now banking on the power of the streaming giant to find a wider audience, less than a month after its theatrical release on July 31.
However, its OTT debut comes at a particularly challenging time, as it faces stiff competition from a barrage of other highly anticipated titles, both domestic and international, hitting streaming platforms this week.
First, we have Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts releasing on JioHotstar on August 27. Given the film’s solid critical and audience reception, this Florence Pugh starrer is one of the most highly anticipated OTT releases among viewers.
The very next day, August 28, Netflix will drop Season 2 of the popular series My Life with the Walter Boys and the new mystery-comedy The Thursday Murders Club, starring the likes of Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
On August 29, Metro In Dino will make its OTT debut. Having performed decently in theatres, it is expected to receive an even better response on Netflix. This means Anurag Basu’s project could easily outperform Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom this week.
Adding to the crowded slate, we have Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham on SonyLIV (August 29), Shodha on ZEE5 (August 29), Songs of Paradise on Prime Video (August 29), and Karate Kid: Legends on Netflix (August 30).
All this suggests that Deverakonda’s Kingdom could fall flat during its OTT run, much like it did theatrically. The film failed at the box office due to a flawed script and inconsistent storytelling. It was criticized for its illogical plot, lack of emotional depth, and a weak second half that felt rushed and overly focused on setting up a sequel. Additionally, its high budget and negative reviews led to a significant deficit, making it a commercial failure.
With the sheer volume of new content from major franchises and popular series, Kingdom faces an uphill battle to capture viewers’ attention. Ultimately, its performance on Netflix will be a crucial test of whether a star’s brand power can overcome a weak script and negative word-of-mouth in today’s competitive streaming landscape.
