Campaigns on X can be very, very powerful. It was never this apparent until Elon Musk overtook Twitter and made it into X.
Elon Musk has once again stirred global controversy after he announced he cancelled his Netflix subscription and urged millions of his followers to do the same. What started as a single post on X, the platform he owns, has now snowballed into a worldwide trend where people are trolling Netflix left, right and centre. Musk accused the streaming giant of pushing what he called harmful content for children, particularly pointing to a show with a transgender lead character. Very quickly, the hashtag #CancelNetflix took over X and users began posting screenshots of their cancellations.
The ripple effect has gone far beyond the United States. In India, the campaign has found unexpected strength with users echoing Musk’s words and accusing Netflix of being too woke. Many are calling the platform dangerous to Indian culture, saying it is destroying traditional values by importing western liberal narratives into Indian homes. Posts from Indian accounts on X have gathered considerable engagement where people proudly claim to have cancelled their subscriptions and urge others to follow.
This could be a serious problem for Netflix in India, where it has always struggled to compete with JioHotstar and Amazon Prime. India is not among Netflix’s biggest subscriber bases, and losing even a fraction of its current audience could cause further setbacks. Combined with a global wave of trolling and a hit to its market value, the campaign shows how one billionaire’s voice on X can ignite cultural battles across continents.
