Madras Hindu Court has pleaded for government intervention in the matters of regulating the content currently being aired on the OTT platform. The bench of Justice R Subramaniam and Justice Victoria Gowri has brought the matter to the central government, directing the plea towards the Ministry of Home Affairs, the ministry of information broadcasting, the telecom regulatory authority of India, along with the ministry of information technology and CBFC.
Advocate Advisivam, in his argument, has stated that the lack of censorship on the OTT platforms allows movies and web series to be aired on this platform, which contained obscenity, drug abuse, crimes against women, and agenda-driven content.
The accusations didn’t end here. The platforms are being accused of twisting history for their political gain and showing extreme nudity and violence. However, any nationalist content is not promoted and even barred on the platform.
The advocate continued, stating that the lack of OTT censorship may cause serious mental and psychological problems as the poisonous ideas are spread through the use of OTT platforms. It also increases the lethargy in the youth as they remain glued to the screen for unacceptable hours. According to the plea, it may have a very bad impact on the youth if the OTT platforms are not leashed through censorship as soon as possible.
