Indian OTT is again being scrutinised. The OTT industry again and again launches apps that serve people with soft porn. Even if we forget that, the exponential rise of Indians’ spending on OnlyFans is also very telling. There is an insane demand for porn or soft-porn content in India. But it is nice to see that the Indian government is taking the threat seriously.
The Indian government has banned several OTT platforms like MoodX VIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu for violating digital content rules. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, these platforms hosted obscene and inappropriate content that broke the IT Rules, 2021. This is not a sudden move. It is part of a larger effort to clean up digital spaces that have been ignoring warnings for a long time.
Many of these platforms were not creating meaningful stories. They were simply pushing graphic sexual content to attract attention and subscriptions. There was no strong plot, no purpose, and no creative value. It was content designed only to shock and exploit curiosity. This crosses the line between entertainment and exploitation.
The government had already warned several OTT platforms in the past. Some were even banned earlier but returned under new names and websites. This shows a clear pattern of disrespect for the law. When platforms knowingly break rules and try to bypass restrictions, strict action becomes necessary.
Freedom of expression is important, but it cannot be used as an excuse to promote harmful or degrading content. OTT platforms have a responsibility to create stories that respect viewers and society. They cannot hide behind the label of entertainment while publishing content that objectifies people and ignores basic standards.
This ban sends a strong and necessary message. Digital platforms are not above the law. If OTT platforms want to grow and gain respect, they must focus on quality storytelling instead of cheap, explicit content.
