Remember Doordarshan, India’s trusty old public broadcaster? Well, it’s about to make a big splash in the streaming world. Its parent company, Prasar Bharati, is launching its own streaming platform.
You know it, we know it.
You see, it is kinda getting boring now with all the Prasar Bharati OTT app news. There is nothing substantial about it but I think that the time has come. Finally, it is ready to be launched.
If reports are to be believed then the launch will be this November itself.
Unlike Netflix or Prime Video or any usual OTT app, Prasar Bharati is opening up its vast treasure chest of classic content. We’re talking about 2,000 gems from India’s rich entertainment archives that have been sitting in their vaults. Plus, they’re creating a space where independent filmmakers can showcase their work and actually make some money from it.
But not everyone’s thrilled about this new player in the streaming game. Naturally, Prasar Bharati will be highly affordable. If its content is loved by people then other OTT platforms might have something to worry about.
Cable TV providers are especially nervous. They’re worried that if people can watch their favourite channels on this new platform, why would they stick with traditional cable? They’re so concerned that they’re writing to the government about it.
The platform is set to launch at the International Film Festival of India in Goa this November, where they’ll also be celebrating the legacies of beloved icons like Raj Kapoor and Mohammed Rafi. It’s like Doordarshan is getting a modern makeover while keeping one foot firmly planted in its rich cultural heritage. Whether this blend of old and new will work…well, that’s something we’ll all have to wait and watch!
Stay tuned for all the details.
