You must have heard about the drama with Netflix’s new show “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack”?
It’s causing quite a stir in India and also a very well made series. A large group of people are not happy because the show has terrorists using Hindu nicknames. Yes, the platform has put a disclaimer but that is limited just to India. Netflix should have informed the whole world that the terrorists were not called Bhola and Shankar.
This whole thing is bringing up a big debate about what streaming services like Netflix can show.
You know how there are already some rules about what these platforms can put out, right? Well, now people are worried that the government might make even stricter rules. It’s got everyone in the TV and movie industry on edge.
These streaming services are already being super careful about what they show. They don’t want to upset anyone or get into trouble. Some folks are even talking about setting up a special group to watch over all the content. Sounds a bit like bringing back the censorship board, doesn’t it?
But there is a sad or let’s say other side of the truth. These streaming platforms are already having a tough time making money. Now, with all this pressure, they’re shying away from anything that might be controversial. Remember how stand-up comedians used to make jokes about politics and stuff? Well, they’re toning it down now because they’re scared of getting into hot water.
Some smart people in the industry are saying that if this keeps up, we might lose out on all the cool, original shows we love. The streaming services might start playing it too safe, you know?
Lawyers who know about this stuff say that these platforms might start changing their shows before anyone complains, just to be on the safe side. It’s all about avoiding trouble and keeping the business running.
The big question is: how do we keep shows interesting and creative without stepping on anyone’s toes? It’s a tricky balance, and everyone’s trying to figure it out.
So, what do you think about all this? Do you think the government should have a say in what streaming services show, or should they be left alone to make their own choices?
