The OTT v/s Cinemas debate has been on the rise recently considering the havoc that is being wrecked on box-offices and how the latter is seemingly only staying afloat by virtue of re-releases and a few highly awaited titles peppered here and there.
However, a direct-to-digital release formula is being used by more and more titles that haven’t quite succeeded in generating online buzz and are only banking on the support of OTT platforms for viewership. Moreover, their only selling audience seems to be bored viewers who’re not really left with anything else to watch.
Take for example the upcoming JioCinema title ‘Krispy Rishtey’. Other than the fact that the title itself sounds like the epitome of cringe, it is not the first of its kind. Multiple other lackluster titles are being released directly on streaming platforms. Varalaxmi’s Telugu courtroom thriller ‘RTI’, slated to premiere on ETV Win is another example of the same.
The only contribution such titles make towards a streaming platform in general, is adding to its viewer library, and that’s it. Alternatively, they do reduce the overall quality of OTT platforms. Sure, these titles need space to be launched as well, but it seems as though it is high time that OTT platforms stopped being used as scapegoats to release below-the-mark films here and there.
