What previously was an escape route for small-budget productions is now becoming a standard route. More and more movies are now being opted for a direct-to-OTT release. But will this model really work for big budget productions? The upcoming Tamil movie ‘Test’ will be Directly coming to OTT. The movie will stream on Netflix and the release date will be announced soon. Even ‘Indian 3’ will have a direct to OTT release in January next year.
‘Test’ stars R. Madhavan, Nayanthara and Siddharth in leading roles and it will be quite an high octane sports drama. It is not with Indian film industries. This is happening in Hollywood as well. Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s ‘Wolfs’ premiered on AppleTV on the 1st day of September. Having two stars of this much fame in an action comedy with such an interesting premise and not releasing it in theaters really sounds like a very bad idea. The movie got a warm reception indeed but it could have been much better than this.
A few years back, small-budget productions opted for OTT releases because it was tough for them to compete against the monopoly of studio films at the box office. The box office landscape is changing very fast. This year we have seen small-budget films like ‘Stree 2’ break box office records and cross a film like Jawan in collections. This , along with the big titles releasing on OTT, will surely change the entertainment industry and will come with some new problems as well as some new delights.
