Yesterday’s World Cup final was a proud moment for India as the women’s cricket team lifted the trophy for the first time. Millions of families sat together to watch history being made. More than 30 crore people tuned in on JioHotstar, including children, teenagers, and elderly viewers. It was a celebration of talent, teamwork, and national pride.
And that’s why we congratulate the Indian Cricket team and every Indian on this occassion.
But what could have been a clean and inspiring experience was spoiled for many by the kind of ads shown during the match. Among the cricket moments and cheers, viewers were shown advertisements that were completely unsuitable for family viewing. A teacher-student love story and even a condom ad appeared during the breaks. Many parents felt awkward, even embarrassed, sitting beside their children. Some had to switch off the match altogether.
Sports events like the World Cup reach every corner of the country. They bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. When such moments are filled with inappropriate content, it not only ruins the experience but also leaves a poor impression on the younger generation. Streaming platforms must take responsibility for what they show during national events. The government too should consider setting stricter rules for advertisements during such broadcasts.
Cricket should unite and inspire us, not make us uncomfortable in our own homes.
Excitedly sat down to watch the match on Hotstar with my 13yr nephew & 9yr niece. I thought cricket would inspire them. 2nd or 3rd ad break & Durex ad showed up. I had to find an excuse to switch off. What a shame @JioHotstar
Anyways congrats girls#WomensWorldCup2025 #TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/FMYGHfwXHG

30 crore people have watched this match on Hotstar so far. It includes many teenagers, elderly people, and even those who may not have high IQ.
This huge audience could be used to promote something meaningful, but what is Hotstar advertising instead? A teacher student love… pic.twitter.com/d4CgrzP1Qg
