It’s no surprise anymore, JioHotstar has been sitting comfortably ahead of Prime Video in the Indian OTT race for a while now. The numbers were never in question. But here’s the thing: being on top doesn’t always mean you’re doing it right.
Because while the subscriber count grows, so does the frustration.
Imagine sitting down for a 30-minute episode, just a quick breather after work, and you’re met with seven ad breaks. Not even spaced out nicely. Some of them stuff three ads into a single break. It’s like we’re back to watching cable TV, except now we’re paying for it.
And here’s what hurts more, JioHotstar has the content. Shows like Kerala Crime Files 2 are genuinely pulling in viewers. Sports coverage is still one of the platform’s biggest draws. But when the viewing experience feels like a constant interruption, the story doesn’t stand a chance.
People aren’t upgrading to Premium. They’re logging out. Some are even saying it’s pushing them toward piracy, not because they want to steal content, but because they feel priced out of peace.
Yes, JioHotstar is winning the numbers game. But there’s a quiet loss happening too, of goodwill, attention, and patience.
If the platform wants to stay on top, it has to remember: people didn’t come here to watch ads. They came for the stories. Let them breathe.
