A new wave of frustration is brewing among users of JioHotstar. The issue? HDR and Dolby Vision. While these are supposed to enhance the viewing experience, users say it’s doing the exact opposite.
Several subscribers have reported that the video quality has become unbearable, describing it as “over saturated” and “painful for the eyes.” The vivid colours, which are meant to create cinematic immersion, instead come across as artificial and jarring. Especially on mid-range TVs and mobile screens, the HDR rendering appears poorly optimised, leading to a distorted experience rather than an upgraded one.
What’s worse? There’s no option to toggle Dolby Vision or HDR off.
For users who simply want to watch content without vibrant colours punching their eyeballs, the lack of a disable button is baffling. Apps like Netflix or Prime Video offer such toggles or fallback mechanisms. But on JioHotstar, it’s either endure the painful visuals or not watch at all.
And the silence is deafening. The OTT giants have no intention to fix it.
If JioHotstar wants to keep pace in the OTT game, giving viewers control over how they watch content, especially with something as basic as HDR, is the least they can do.
