Dhanush’s latest period action Tamil thriller, Kara, suffered from poor advance bookings, low promotional hype, and polarised reception from both critics and audiences. As a result, it tanked hard at the box office. It barely managed to cross the INR 50 crore mark during its theatrical run, despite its massive INR 100 crore budget. Now, it is set for its OTT premiere on Netflix.
Directed by the visionary Vignesh Raja, Kara presents a gritty narrative tailored around structural injustice and personal vengeance. The plot follows the high-stakes journey of a reformed thief who wants nothing more than to leave his dark past behind.
However, fate takes a cruel turn when a bank aggressively seizes his family’s ancestral land. Pushed to the brink by systemic corruption, he is left with no choice but to plunge right back into the brutal underbelly of the crime world.
Dhanush’s rugged, impactful performance was well-received by viewers. But its cliché-ridden and predictable storyline was one of the big things that hurt the film.
Mamitha Baiju takes on a pivotal role as Selli. The film also boasts seasoned stalwarts of the industry, including K. S. Ravikumar as Kandhasaami, Jayaram as Muthu Selvan, Karunas as Kasi Maayan, and acclaimed actor Suraj Venjaramoodu as Bharathan. The film’s score and music are composed by the powerhouse G.V. Prakash Kumar.
Streaming giant Netflix has successfully secured the digital streaming rights for Kara. According to reports, the film is expected to make its highly anticipated debut on the platform starting May 28, 2026. True to Netflix’s expansive reach, the thriller is likely to drop in multiple languages, making it widely accessible to a pan-Indian audience in both Tamil and Telugu. Stay tuned for more updates.
