With OTTs dominating our entertainment space, it seems as if they have started taking their audience for granted. A recent survey has shown that a large number of people have come to realise later that they have to pay extra to watch certain shows or movies, even after paying a subscription fee.
This is especially upsetting when users discover that the content they were excited about is actually locked behind an additional charge they were not clearly informed of before.
Additional charges being added in OTT services besides the subscription charge have unfortunately become commonplace, with instances such as skipping of ads. So, despite already having a paid subscription, people end up spending extra just to watch in peace.
This sneaky system lures people into subscribing with attractive offers, but the real picture is only revealed later with these very offers being locked behind more paywalls. By then, many users feel their subscription will go to waste if they don’t pay the additional required amount to watch their favourite movie or show.
According to the survey 53% of the audience using OTT services were shocked to find that some of the most popular movies and series still required additional payment despite having an active subscription. People are calling this strategy unfair and manipulative.
They feel that if they are paying a subscription fee, everything should be included, or at least such extra costs should be made clear from the beginning instead of being stated unintuitively.
With how dominant OTT services have become, with increasing amounts of these complaints coming in, a bleak picture is portrayed.
