You know that you are walking towards a perfect dystopia if machines are doing creative work and humans are doing extensive manual labour.
It is that original creativity that drives us humans and we definitely need to respect that. All the institutions be it society, companies or even family must respect it or be ready to live the lives of a slave.
The latest change at Netflix does not reflect that.
Netflix made changes to its famous company culture guidelines in June, after spending a year gathering feedback from 1,500 employees.
However, the updates have sparked some criticism. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos admitted that the original culture focused more on “freedom” than on “responsibility.”
In the new version, Netflix removed the section on “freedom and responsibility” and introduced a new idea called “People Over Process.”
This shift talks about the importance of hiring people who are highly responsible and can succeed in an open, independent work environment. Netflix now wants employees who can thrive with less control and more trust.
Netflix also updated its “Keeper’s Test,” which has been used since 2009 to evaluate employee performance. The revised test encourages more frequent conversations between employees and managers about how they are doing in their jobs and what can be improved.
Speaking about these changes, Sarandos said at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference that culture must evolve over time. He added that Netflix wanted to reflect how employees work, rather than dictate a strict way of working.
You see, changes are definitely important. But those changes should lead us towards betterment. Snatching freedom certainly doesn’t sound like something that would make the lives of Netflix employees any better.
